LXX Jeremiah and MT Jeremiah equivalencies
I'm editing a book of papers from a conference for SBL Press. Among the essays/papers is one that references LXX Jeremiah frequently. In the process of checking the MT-LXX cross-references, I noticed that the list of equivalencies in SBLHS2 has some errors. Specifically: appendix B, p. 268: MT Jer 49:7–22 is equivalent to Jer 30:1–16 LXX, not Jer 29:8–23 (there are only seven verses in Jer 29). And it looks like the other equivalents in Jer 49 MT are also wrong, but I didn’t need to chase those, so I’m not sure the exact verses.
The problem is actually that the versification is different between the two main editions of LXX-Jeremiah. It appears that you were using the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition, but the critical text edition (edited by Joseph Ziegler) in the Göttingen LXX series actually uses different numbering in this instance (Jer 29:8–23 [Z] vs. 30:1–16 [RH]) and in a few others (9:1–26 [Z] vs. 8:23–9:25 [RH]; 10:5a [Z] vs. 10:9a [RH]; 26:1 [Z] vs. 35:20 [RH]; 30:1–5 [Z] vs. 30:17–21 [RH]; 30:6–11 [Z] vs. 30:23–28 [RH]; 30:12–16 [Z] vs. 30:29–33 [RH]; 32:1–24 [Z] vs. 32:15–38 [RH]; 34:1–18 [Z] vs. 34:2–22 [RH]).
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, NETS (the standard English translation of the LXX) follows Ziegler's numbering.
Thanks. I don't have access to the Göttingen, so yes, I was using Rahlfs-Hanhart. Good to know that NETS follows the Göttigen edition. I'll keep that in mind in the future
