Redeemed!

646 Redeemed

1 Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
   Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb!
   redeemed through His infinite mercy—
   His child, and forever, I am.

Refrain:
   Redeemed, redeemed,
   redeemed by the blood of the Lamb!
   Redeemed, redeemed–
   His child and forever, I am.

2 Redeemed and so happy in Jesus,
   no language my rapture can tell!
   I know that the light of His presence
   with me doth continually dwell. [Refrain]

3 I think of my blessed Redeemer;
   I think of Him all the day long.
   I sing, for I cannot be silent;
   His love is the theme of my song. [Refrain]

4 I know I shall see in His beauty
   the King in whose law I delight,
   who lovingly guardeth my footsteps
   and giveth me songs in the night. [Refrain]

Jesus Is Calling (Crosby)

434 Jesus Is Calling

1 Jesus is tenderly calling thee home-
   Calling today, calling today;
   Why from the sunshine of love wilt thou roam
   Farther and farther away?

Refrain:
   Calling today,
   Calling today,
   Jesus is calling,
   Is tenderly calling today.

2 Jesus is calling the weary to rest-
   Calling today, calling today;
   Bring Him thy burden and thou shalt be blest-
   He will not turn thee away. [Refrain]

3 Jesus is waiting; O come to Him now-
   Waiting today, waiting today;
   Come with thy sins, at His feet lowly bow-
   Come, and no longer delay. [Refrain]

4 Jesus is pleading; O list to His voice-
   Hear Him today, hear Him today;
   They who believe on His name shall rejoice-
   Quickly arise and away. [Refrain]

To God be the Glory

363 To God Be the Glory

1 To God be the glory - great things He hath done!
   So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
   Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
   And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:
   Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice!
   Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
   O come to the Father, through Jesus, the Son,
   and give Him the glory - great things He hath done.

2 O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!
   To ev'ry believer the promise of God;
   The vilest offender who truly believes,
   That moment from Jesus a pardon receives. [Refrain]

3 Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
   And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
   But purer and higher and greater will be
   Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. [Refrain]

I was very surprised to see that this standard Crosby hymn only occurs in about 230 hymnals. I was also surprised to see that I hadn't posted it yet. Apparently it doesn't occur in any of the three Methodist hymnals I own! I grew up singing it, so I'm not sure where I learned it, unless it was in a hymnal/songbook my parents owned—or maybe in a Sunday School songbook.

Tell Me the Story of Jesus

215 Tell Me the Story of Jesus

1 Tell me the story of Jesus,
   write on my heart every word;
   tell me the story most precious,
   sweetest that ever was heard.
   Tell how the angels, in chorus
   sang as they welcomed his birth,
   "Glory to God in the highest!
   Peace and good tidings to earth."

Refrain:
   Tell me the story of Jesus,
   write on my heart every word;
   tell me the story most precious,
   sweetest that ever was heard.

2 Fasting alone in the desert,
   tell of the days that he passed,
   how for our sins he was tempted,
   yet was triumphant at last.
   Tell of the years of his labor,
   tell of the sorrow he bore;
   he was despised and afflicted,
   homeless, rejected, and poor. [Refrain]

3 Tell of the cross where they nailed him,
   writhing in anguish and pain;
   tell of the grave where they laid him;
   tell how he liveth again.
   Love in that story so tender,
   clearer than ever I see:
   stay, let me weep while you whisper,
   Love paid the ransom for me. [Refrain]

He Hideth My Soul

120 He Hideth My Soul

1. A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
   A wonderful Savior to me;
   He's hiding my soul in the cleft of the rock,
   Where rivers of pleasure I see.

Refrain:
   He's hiding my soul in the cleft of the rock
   That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
   He's hiding my life in the depths of his love
   And cov'ring me there with his hand,
   And cov'ring me there with his hand.

2. A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord;
   He carries my burdens away,
   He's holding me up, and I shall not be moved;
   He's giving me strength day by day. [Refrain]

3. With numberless blessings each moment he crowns
   And fills with his fullness divine;
   I sing in my rapture, oh, glory to God
   For such a Redeemer is mine. [Refrain]

4. When clothed in his brightness, transported I rise
   To meet him in clouds of the sky,
   His perfect salvation, his wonderful love,
   I'll shout with the millions on high. [Refrain]

Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross

433 Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross

1 Jesus, keep me near the cross;
   There's a precious fountain,
   Free to all, a healing stream,
   Flows from Calv'ry's mountain.

Refrain:
   In the cross, in the cross
   Be my glory ever,
   Till my ransomed soul shall find
   Rest beyond the river.

2 Near the cross, a trembling soul,
   Love and mercy found me;
   There the bright and morning star
   Shed its beams around me. [Refrain]

3 Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
   Bring its scenes before me;
   Help me walk from day to day
   With its shadow o'er me. [Refrain]

4 Near the cross! I'll watch and wait,
   Hoping, trusting ever,
   Till I reach the golden strand,
   Just beyond the river. [Refrain]

Savior, More Than Life to Me

226 Savior, More Than Life to Me

1 Savior, more than life to me,
   I am clinging, clinging close to Thee;
   Let Thy precious blood applied,
   Keep me ever, ever near Thy side.

Refrain:
   Ev'ry day, ev'ry hour,
   Let me feel thy cleansing pow'r;
   May Thy tender love to me
   Bind me closer, closer, Lord, to Thee.

2 Through this changing world below,
   Lead me gently, gently as I go;
   Trusting Thee, I cannot stray,
   I can never, never lose my way. [Refrain]

3 Let me love Thee more and more,
   Till this fleeting, fleeting life is o'er;
   Till my soul is lost in love,
   In a brighter, brighter world above. [Refrain]

<idle musing>
Not one of her more popular hymns. It only occurs in a little over 400 hymnals. I don't recall ever singing it, but I might just be having a memory lapse.

It definitely speaks to our needs in this hour, though. But then, it speaks to every hour because life on earth is anything but certain, even in the best of times.

All the Way My Savior Leads Me

205 All the Way My Savior Leads Me

1. All the way my Savior leads me
   What have I to ask beside?
   Can I doubt His tender mercy,
   Who through life has been my Guide?
   Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,
   Here by faith in Him to dwell!
   For I know, whate’er befall me,
   Jesus doeth all things well;
   For I know, whate’er befall me,
   Jesus doeth all things well.

2. All the way my Savior leads me,
   Cheers each winding path I tread,
   Gives me grace for every trial,
   Feeds me with the living Bread.
   Though my weary steps may falter
   And my soul athirst may be,
   Gushing from the Rock before me,
   Lo! A spring of joy I see;
   Gushing from the Rock before me,
   Lo! A spring of joy I see.

3. All the way my Savior leads me,
   Oh, the fullness of His love!
   Perfect rest to me is promised
   In my Father’s house above.
   When my spirit, clothed immortal,
   Wings its flight to realms of day
   This my song through endless ages:
   Jesus led me all the way;
   This my song through endless ages:
   Jesus led me all the way.

I was surprised to learn that this hymn only occurs in 324 hymnals—and that it didn't appear in the earlier Methodist hymnal. I remember singing a lot as a kid; maybe it was in one of the Sunday school songbooks?

Thou My Everlasting Portion

176 Thou My Everlasting Portion

1 Thou my everlasting portion,
   More than friend or life to me,
   All along my pilgrim journey,
   Savior, let me walk with Thee.

2 Not for ease or worldly pleasure,
   Nor for fame my prayer shall be;
   Gladly will I toil and suffer,
   Only let me walk with thee.

3 Lead me thro' the vale of shadows,
   Bear me o'er life's fitful sea:
   Then the gate of life eternal
   May I enter, Lord, with thee.
                         Fanny Crosby
                         The Methodist Hymnal 1964 edition

<idle musing>
Some add a refrain:

Close to thee, close to thee,
Close to thee, close to thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with thee.

Draw me nearer

252 I Am Thine. 10. 7. 10. 7. with Refrain.

1. I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
   And it told Thy love to me;
   But I long to rise in the arms of faith
   And be closer drawn to Thee.

Refrain:
   Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
   To the cross where Thou hast died;
   Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
   To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
   By the pow’r of grace divine;
   Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
   And my will be lost in Thine. [Refrain]

3. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
   That before Thy throne I spend,
   When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
   I commune as friend with friend! [Refrain]

4. There are depths of love that I cannot know
   Till I cross the narrow sea;
   There are heights of joy that I may not reach
   Till I rest in peace with Thee. [Refrain]

Rescue the perishing

250 Rescue. 6. 5. 10. D. with Refrain.

1 Rescue the perishing,
   Care for the dying,
   Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
   Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
   Tell them of Jesus the mighty to save.

Refrain:
   Rescue the perishing,
   Care for the dying;
   Jesus is merciful,
   Jesus will save.

2 Though they are slighting Him,
   Still He is waiting,
   Waiting the penitent child to receive;
   Plead with them earnestly, plead with them gently;
   He will forgive if they only believe. [Refrain]

3 Down in the human heart,
   Crushed by the tempter,
   Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
   Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
   Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. [Refrain]

4 Rescue the perishing,
   Duty demands it;
   Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
   Back to the narrow way patiently win them;
   Tell the poor wanderer a Savior has died. [Refrain]

Blessed Assurance!

238 Assurance. 9. 10. 9. 9. with Refrain.

1 Blessed assurance; Jesus is mine!
   O what a foretaste of glory divine!
   Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
   Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain:
   This is my story, this is my song,
   Praising my Savior all the day long;
   This is my story, this is my song,
   Praising my Savior all the day long.

2 Perfect submission, perfect delight,
   Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
   Angels descending bring from above
   Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. [Refrain]

3 Perfect submission, all is at rest,
   I in my Savior am happy and blest;
   Watching and waiting, looking above,
   Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. [Refrain]

Probably one of Fanny Crosby's most well-known hymns. What surprised me was that it only occurs in a little over a thousand hymnals. I expected twice that. You never know what to expect!

While I knew quite a bit about Fanny Crosby, I never realized she wrote under pseudonymns. Check out the link to see them. She also was the first woman to speak publicly in the Senate chamber! Quite an accomplishment for a woman, let alone a blind one, in the 19th century.
