When she came in this morning, the traps were still set, but the rice cake was gone...I told you they were erudite mice! We'll try again tonight.

You has to put the food a little bit more to the back. You must force the mice walking on the trap.
An other solution is using rice with some castor-bean oil (Ricinus communis, the same plant of Jona 4:6), but this is very poisonousness so no other animals in the neighborhood.
