I regard this discrepancy between what YHWH would do and what Israel should do a typical characteristic of the mutuality of their relationship. I like that. The whole "canonical approach" can be an excuse to not look at the back-history of the text, but so also the historical-critical approach can miss the theological nuggets hiding in plain sight in the received text. One or the other? No, both and.
