The rule of faith
I would argue that the dynamic that seems clear enough in the regula dei, even if still somewhat fuzzy, was operative long before the second-century church fathers. This same feedback loop, dynamic “arc of understanding,” and reverberation between faith, practice, and authoritative locus (underwritten by the experience of faith and of its practice) is evident, for example, in 1–2 Maccabees, though of course not only there. Still, this example is useful, since it demonstrates that the kind of regula dei dynamic I am suggesting actually was operational in later stages of Second Temple Judaism.—Brent A.
